Principles of Partnership:


  1. Conformity with FAO's mandate and work programme - Activities held through the partnership should be consistent with FAO's mandate.  If FAO considers an operation to be unethical it will not be performed.
  2. Transparency - FAO/private sector initiatives should be fully transparent.  Information will be available to the public.
  3. Mutual interests and objectives - Partnership activities should have mutual interest.
  4. Accountability - Activities must ensure clear and agreed responsibility as well accountability by all partners.
  5. Endorsement - No partnership activity may be construed as an FAO endorsement of any product or service of a private sector partner.
  6. Sustainability - The purpose of partnership activities is to promote sustainability (economic, environmental and social) as well as to take maximum advantage of a partner's resources.
  7. Scientific credibility - Partnership activities should be defensible in terms of objective scientific judgement.
  8. Intellectual property - Consultation and prior agreement will be made between FAO and private sector partners concerning activities that could produce material subject to copyright, patent or other intellectual property jurisdiction.
  9. Partnership protocols - Specific protocols will be required by FAO or memorandums of understanding incorporating the above initiatives.
  10. Non-exclusivity - FAO will only enter into an agreement if the partner also includes the right to negotiate a similar agreement with other partners.
